“So the world’s ending again, huh?” Those are words that could be spoken by any Umbrella Academy fan to describe any season of the show—or any member of the show’s timeline-challenged and often inconveniently super-powered Hargreeves family. But there’s extra poignancy and urgency this time around, as the series based on the Dark Horse comics by Gerard Way (whose band, My Chemical Romance, supplies the perfect tune for this farewell trailer) and Gabriel Bá comes to its own end.
This new glimpse at the upcoming final season teases all the shenanigans we’ve come to expect and love from The Umbrella Academy, plus a teensy bit more plot detail—namely that “Tentacle Boy” (Justin H. Min’s Ben Hargreeves), as Nick Offerman’s new-for-season-four character explains, will play a huge part in the impending potential apocalypse. Ben’s history and alternate-timeline history have already come into play in previous seasons, so it’ll definitely be interesting to see how his future might also alter the Umbrella world as we know it.
The Umbrella Academy was created for TV and is showrun by Steve Blackman; Netflix’s official description for season four is as follows: “The Hargreeves siblings have scattered after the climactic showdown at the Hotel Oblivion led to a complete reset of their timeline. Stripped of their powers, each is left to fend for themselves and find a new normal—with wildly varying degrees of success. Yet the trappings of their uncanny new world prove too hard to ignore for very long. Their father Reginald, alive and well, has stepped out of the shadows and into the public eye, overseeing a powerful and nefarious business empire. A mysterious association known as the Keepers holds clandestine meetings believing the reality they’re living in is a lie and a great reckoning is coming. As these strange new forces conspire around them, the Umbrella Academy must come together one last time—and risk upsetting the shaky peace they’ve all endured so much to secure—to finally set things right.
Normal? This family? Never! Netflix also unleashed a set of new photos and trailer images from season four, showing off the cast that includes Elliot Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, Justin H. Min, Ritu Arya, and Colm Feore—plus newbies Offerman, Megan Mullally, and David Cross. Check out season four of The Umbrella Academy August 8—and there’s still plenty of time to catch up on the existing three seasons, all available on Netflix.
